What it is
IMPA 770655 is a 6204ZZ C3 single-row deep groove ball bearing. In NTN’s catalogue the 6204 has a 20 mm bore, 47 mm outside diameter and 14 mm width. Its basic load ratings are 14.2 kN dynamic and 6.65 kN static.[1]
ZZ means a metal shield plate on each side, fixed to the outer ring, with a small labyrinth gap at the inner ring. It does not touch the inner ring. NTN rates its dust-proofing as good and its water-proofing as poor. Running torque stays low and the speed capability is the same as an open bearing. Shielded and sealed bearings come pre-greased.[1]
How to specify and order it
Keep all three parts of the designation. 770255 is the 6204ZZ with normal clearance, 770635 is the 6204Z C3 with one shield only, 770305 is the 6204-2RS with rubber seals, and 770755 is the 6304ZZ C3. The 6304 has the same 20 mm bore but is 52 mm outside and 15 mm wide, so it will not fit a 6204 housing.[1]
C3 is a clearance class, not a quality grade. For a 20 mm bore NTN gives radial internal clearance of 5–20 µm for normal (CN) and 13–28 µm for C3. NTN also lists small electric motors that need low noise as a case for C2 or CM, which is tighter, not C3. Copy the clearance stamped on the old bearing or given in the machine’s parts list.[1]
Choose ZZ or a sealed version for the job. NTN gives an allowable grease speed for the 6204 of 16,000 min⁻¹ for open and ZZ types, against 10,000 min⁻¹ for the contact-sealed LLU type. A contact seal keeps water out much better, but it limits speed.[1]
