Welfare Items

Welfare items are the stores that make a long voyage bearable: board and card games, a dartboard for the mess room, footballs and table tennis, musical instruments, toiletries and cosmetics for the slop chest, smoking goods, and the decorations that appear each December. They are requisitioned by the master or chief officer, usually with the crew’s own list attached, and often bought for the slop chest to be sold on board at cost.

Suppliers quote them by the set or the piece. Where a brand matters — cosmetics and cigarettes in particular — write it on the requirement, because the IMPA code fixes the kind of item, not the make.
