STORM VALVE VERTICAL TYPE, W/HANDLE CAST STEEL 10K 50MM 754229

Vertical cast-steel JIS 10K storm valve, 50 mm, with handle: the JIS number, flange and part materials to check, and Load Line regulation 22.

What it is

IMPA 754229 is a vertical-type storm valve with a handle: cast-steel body, JIS 10K, 50 mm nominal size. It goes on a discharge led out through the ship’s side, such as a scupper or sanitary discharge, to stop water passing inboard.[2]

How to specify and order it

The code fixes cast steel, JIS 10K, the vertical pattern, 50 mm and the handle. Quote the old valve’s flange drilling and face-to-face so a replacement drops in.

Check the JIS number on the ship’s drawing, not the vendor’s label. The current JSTRA list carries JIS F 3057:2020, Shipbuilding – Vertical storm valves for ships, and JIS F 7400:2015 for the tests and inspections of marine valves and cocks. Name the pattern, body material and handle in words as well as the number.[1]

Ask bidders to state the flange dimensions, height, weight and the materials of body, seat, disc and stem, so offers can be compared with the valve being replaced.

Rules and approvals

Load Line regulation 22(1)(a): the means of operating a positive-closing valve must be readily accessible and have an indicator showing whether the valve is open or closed. Regulation 22(1)(b) accepts one automatic non-return valve plus a sluice valve controlled from above the freeboard deck instead. Under 22(1)(f), discharges kept closed at sea may have a single screw-down valve operated from the deck.[2]

Regulation 22(6): shell fittings and these valves must be of steel, bronze or other approved ductile material, and valves of ordinary cast iron are not acceptable. A cast-steel body meets that. The JIS standard for tests and inspections of marine valves and cocks is JIS F 7400.[2][1]

Questions buyers ask

Which JIS standard covers a vertical storm valve?
The current JSTRA list carries JIS F 3057:2020, Shipbuilding – Vertical storm valves for ships. Supplier catalogues may use other numbers, so check the ship’s drawing.
