Portable drinking-water test kit for ships: the ten parameters one flag requires a self-test kit to determine, test intervals, records and refills.
What it is
IMPA 652825 is a portable kit the crew uses to test drinking water on board. The code name gives no list of contents, so two suppliers can quote very different kits against the same code.
The kit is how a ship tests its own water between laboratory checks. Some flags allow self-testing in place of sending samples to a laboratory, but only if the kit covers set parameters.[1]
How to specify and order it
Write the parameters into the requisition. Portugal’s Circular No 74 lists what a self-test kit must clearly determine: coliforms and E. coli, intestinal enterococci, total bacteria count, Legionella, copper, chlorine and pH, turbidity, colour, iron and conductivity. That list is a useful benchmark even if your flag is not Portugal. A chlorine-and-pH kit alone covers only one line of it.[1]
Ask the supplier how the kit performs the bacteriological tests, how long a result takes and how many tests the reagents give. Ask too for the refill part numbers so reagents can be reordered without buying a new kit.[1]
If the ship doses Hadex (550665 to 550668), the maker offers Waterlab test kits that measure the amount of active Hadex in the water. State whether the kit must read that, or free chlorine generally.[2]
Rules and approvals
Under the Portuguese circular, tanked drinking water must be tested at least once a year. The sample is drawn at the final dispensing point after it has flowed through the system. A ship that self-tests must do so every six months. If a result exceeds the WHO Guide to Ship Sanitation, use of the water is suspended and sealed samples go to an accredited laboratory. The master keeps test records for port State and flag inspectors.[1]
