GREASE EXTREME-PRESSURE, SHELL ALVANIA EP-2 16KG 450163
Shell Alvania EP(LF) 2 is now sold as Shell Gadus S2 V220 2: lithium EP grease, NLGI 2, 220 cSt base oil, -20 to +130 °C. Ordering the 16 kg can.
What it is
IMPA 450163 is Shell’s lithium extreme-pressure grease in NLGI grade 2, in a 16 kg can, under its old name Alvania EP-2. Shell now sells it as Shell Gadus S2 V220 2. Shell’s data sheet gives the former names as Shell Alvania EP(LF) 2 and Shell Retinax EP 2.[1]
Shell describes it as a multipurpose EP grease for rolling and plain bearings, hinges and sliding surfaces. It is aimed at heavily loaded bearings, including shock loads in wet conditions. On board that means deck machinery, winch and windlass bearings and general grease points.[1]
How to specify and order it
Quote both names on the requisition: "Shell Alvania EP 2 / Gadus S2 V220 2, 16 kg". A supplier who only stocks the new name can then match it. Shell’s typical data sheet values are NLGI 2 with a lithium soap thickener and mineral base oil. Base-oil viscosity is 220 cSt at 40 °C and 19 cSt at 100 °C. Worked penetration is 265–295, dropping point 180 °C and four-ball weld load 315 kg. The recommended operating range is -20 °C to +130 °C.[1]
If another brand is offered, ask for a lithium-soap EP grease of NLGI 2 with similar base-oil viscosity. The IMPA neighbours are Esso Lithtan EP-2 (450168, 16 kg) and Mobil Mobilux EP-2 (450172, 18 kg). The softer Shell grades are EP-1 (450162) and EP-RO (450161). Do not swap grades without checking the lubrication chart.[1]
Rules and approvals
Shell’s data sheet says the grease must not come into contact with the rubber parts of hydraulic brake systems. Used grease must go to an authorised collection point, not into drains, soil or water. Health and safety guidance is in the product safety data sheet, so keep it with the lubricant stores.[1]
