FIRE HOSE RUBBER LINED TETORON, 50MMX15MTR 0.9MPA 330702

IMPA 330702, a 50 mm × 15 m rubber-lined polyester fire hose at 0.9 MPa: the 15 m machinery-space limit, the approved 1.3 MPa alternatives, what to state.

What it is

IMPA 330702 is one length of lay-flat fire hose: rubber lined, with a Tetoron jacket, 50 mm bore, 15 m long, rated 0.9 MPa. TETORON is a polyester fibre, a trademark shared by Toray and Teijin. The other lengths of the same hose are 20 m (330705), 25 m (330708) and 30 m (330711).[1]

Fifteen metres is the longest hose SOLAS allows in machinery spaces. SOLAS regulation II-2/10 §2.3.1.1 sets fire hoses at least 10 m long, but not more than 15 m in machinery spaces, 20 m in other spaces and open decks, and 25 m on open decks of ships wider than 30 m. That makes 330702 the size for engine-room hydrants of a 50 mm system.[2]

How to specify and order it

Check the approval before ordering. Fire hoses must be of an approved non-perishable material. The name of 330702 carries no approval, while the same size is listed with approvals at 1.3 MPa: DNV approved (330717), UK DOT (330722) and Hong Kong approved (330737). If the flag or class wants an approved hose with a certificate, order one of those codes, or state the approval on the requisition.[3][2]

Say whether the hose comes bare or with couplings, and name the coupling (for example Storz C, with its hose end matched to the hose bore). Each hose is provided with a nozzle and the necessary couplings.[3]

Keep the 50 mm size consistent with the ship. Canada’s regulations, for example, set a minimum hose diameter of 38 mm and require all hoses to have the same diameter, except smaller hoses in machinery spaces and other interior locations for easier handling.[4]

Rules and approvals

Machinery-space hoses are a common inspection finding. A Prevention at Sea circular reports engine-room hoses found longer than 15 m and not connected to the hydrants, and points to SOLAS II-2/10 §2.3.1.1. Its checklist asks for approved hoses with their certificate, long enough to reach any part of the machinery space, and connected to the hydrants at all times.[2]

Canada’s regulations also require hoses in a category A machinery space, or serving a space with flammable materials, to be connected to the hydrants at all times. Where there is more than one such hose, one is also connected to a portable foam applicator.[4]

Questions buyers ask

Can a 20 m fire hose be used in the engine room?
Not under SOLAS. Fire hoses in machinery spaces are at least 10 m and no more than 15 m long. The 20 m limit applies to other spaces and open decks.
What is Tetoron in a fire hose?
TETORON is a polyester fibre, a trademark shared by Toray and Teijin. Here it is the woven jacket over the rubber lining.
