FIRE HOSE RUBBER LINED TETORON, 40MMX15MTR 0.9MPA 330701
IMPA 330701: one 40 mm × 15 m rubber-lined Tetoron fire hose at 0.9 MPa. Where the small bore fits, the approved 40 mm codes and what to state.
What it is
IMPA 330701 is one length of lay-flat fire hose: rubber lined, with a Tetoron jacket, 40 mm bore, 15 m long, rated 0.9 MPa. TETORON is a polyester fibre, a trademark shared by Toray and Teijin. It is the smallest bore and the shortest length in this hose series. The same 40 mm hose comes in 20 m (330704), 25 m (330707) and 30 m (330710).[1]
A 40 mm hose is lighter to run out and handle than the 50 mm and 65 mm sizes, which is why ships use it inside. Canada’s rules, for example, set a minimum hose diameter of 38 mm and require all hoses to have the same diameter, but allow smaller hoses in machinery spaces and other interior locations for easier handling.[4]
How to specify and order it
Order by the piece and match the hose already at the hydrant: bore, length and coupling. The 15 m length is the longest SOLAS allows in machinery spaces. SOLAS II-2/10 §2.3.1.1 sets fire hoses at least 10 m long, but not more than 15 m in machinery spaces, 20 m in other spaces and open decks, and 25 m on open decks of ships wider than 30 m.[3]
Match the nozzle to the space. Under SOLAS the standard nozzle sizes are 12 mm, 16 mm and 19 mm, and in accommodation and service spaces a nozzle larger than 12 mm need not be used. In machinery spaces and exterior locations the nozzle is sized for the maximum discharge from two jets. Each hose is provided with a nozzle and the necessary couplings, so say whether you want the hose bare or with couplings and name the coupling type and size.[3]
Check the approval before ordering. SOLAS requires fire hoses of non-perishable material approved by the Administration, and auditors ask for an approved hose with its certificate. The name of 330701 carries no approval. In 40 mm the approved codes are rated 1.3 MPa: DNV approved 15 m (330715) and 20 m (330716), and Hong Kong approved 15 m (330734), 20 m (330735) and 25 m (330736). The UK DOT series starts at 45 mm (330721), so there is no UK DOT code in 40 mm.[3][2]
Do not assume a 40 mm hose fits a US-flagged ship. US rules give interior hose as 1½ inch with National Standard coupling threads for the 1½ inch (38 mm) and 2½ inch (64 mm) sizes, and require lined commercial fire hose to UL 19 or Federal Specification ZZ-H-451E.[5]
Rules and approvals
SOLAS II-2/10 §2.3.2 leaves the number and diameter of hoses to the Administration. Passenger ships carry at least one hose for each required hydrant. Cargo ships of 1,000 gross tonnage and upwards carry one hose for each 30 m of ship length and one spare, and never fewer than five; smaller cargo ships carry at least three. Unless each hydrant has its own hose and nozzle, couplings and nozzles must be fully interchangeable.[3]
Engine-room hoses are a common audit finding: hoses found longer than 15 m and not connected to the hydrants. Canada’s rules require hoses in a category A machinery space, or serving a space with flammable materials, to be connected to the hydrants at all times, and require non-sparking nozzles, couplings and fittings such as brass or bronze on tankers.[2][4]
On US-flagged ships over 1,500 gross tons, interior hydrants may have wye connections for 1½ inch hoses. The hose must then be 75 ft long, or 50 ft where all stations can be served with that length, and only one hose is needed at each station.[5]
Questions buyers ask
- Where is a 40 mm fire hose used on a ship?
- Mostly inside: accommodation, service spaces and machinery spaces, where a lighter hose is easier to handle. In accommodation and service spaces SOLAS does not require a nozzle larger than 12 mm.
- Is IMPA 330701 an approved fire hose?
- Its name carries no approval. For an approved 40 mm hose, the DNV approved codes 330715 and 330716 and the Hong Kong approved codes 330734 to 330736 are rated 1.3 MPa.
