PAINT SPRAY MARKING, LACQUER ENAMEL COLOR 400CC 251283
Lacquer enamel marking spray in colour, 400 cc aerosol can: how to state the colour, the 300 cc and white neighbours, and aerosol hazards and storage.
What it is
IMPA 251283 is a 400 cc aerosol can of quick marking paint, a lacquer enamel, in a colour other than white. The crew use it for small marking jobs: pipe and valve identification, tank and space markings, stencils, numbering and touch-up of signs, where a can is quicker than opening a tin and brush.
How to specify and order it
The code says “colour” but not which colour. State it on every line, by name and if possible by a colour reference such as RAL, or match it to the ship’s colour scheme or the pipe-marking colours in use. Without it, suppliers will each guess.
Choose the right neighbour. The group has four codes: white in 400 cc (251281) and 300 cc (251282), and colour in 400 cc (251283, this item) and 300 cc (251284). For several colours, raise one line per colour under the same code, with the quantity of cans for each.
Aerosols travel as dangerous goods. A typical solvent-borne aerosol paint’s safety data sheet gives UN 1950, aerosols, transport class 2.1. Ask for the SDS with the delivery and let the supplier know if the cans must go by air or with other dangerous goods.[1]
Rules and approvals
A typical aerosol paint SDS classifies the product as an extremely flammable aerosol (H222) in a pressurised container that may burst if heated (H229). It may also cause serious eye irritation (H319) and drowsiness or dizziness (H336). It says to keep it away from heat, sparks and open flames, not to pierce or burn the can even after use, to protect it from sunlight and not to expose it to temperatures above 50 °C.[1]
COSWP: aerosols may have volatile and inflammable contents. Never use or place them near naked flames or other heat sources, even when empty, and dispose of empty cans properly. COSWP also notes that a compartment may become a dangerous enclosed space while spray painting is done in it.[2]
