NON-SLIP SAND FISNIH 251247

Non-slip sand finish sold by the litre: aggregate or ready-mixed coating, what to write next to the code, and how it differs from the alkyd deck paints.

What it is

IMPA 251247 is listed as a non-slip sand finish, ordered by the litre (LTR). The catalogue name is short and spelt “FISNIH”; it gives no resin type, colour or maker. Every other line in the group is an alkyd non-slip or non-skid deck paint sold by the can in a named colour and weight (for example 251231, reddish brown 24.6 kg).

On the market a sand-type non-slip finish comes in two forms. One is a dry aggregate added to the topcoat: one maker’s marine data sheet says it is broadcast over the wet paint, with an extra coat over it if needed to embed it, or pre-mixed in the wet paint and applied by brush or roller. The other is a ready-mixed, aggregated deck coating that dries to a rough anti-slip finish, such as one maker’s modified alkyd sold in 1, 2.5 and 5 litre tins.[1][2]

How to specify and order it

Say which form you want. A litre unit fits a liquid, ready-mixed coating; the marine aggregate data sheet above sells its aggregate by weight, in a 25 kg bag. If the ship wants aggregate to add to its own deck paint, write that on the requisition so a supplier does not quote a coating, or the other way round.[1]

For a ready-mixed coating, give the area to be done and the colour. One ready-mixed aggregated deck coating gives an expected spreading rate of 6 to 10 m² per litre at 60 to 100 microns dry film, and warns that the practical rate on a rough or porous surface may be lower. It is not to be thinned and needs at least 16 hours, or overnight, before recoating.[2]

For an aggregate, name the topcoat it goes into and ask the paint maker for the scheme: the aggregate data sheet sends the user to the maker for scheme recommendations, and says the aggregate must be dry when used.[1]

Ask for the technical data sheet and the safety data sheet with the quotation. Both data sheets above direct the user to the safety data sheet before use, and the coating sheet asks for ventilation in confined spaces during application and drying.[1][2]

Questions buyers ask

Is non-slip sand mixed into the paint or sprinkled on?
Either, depending on the product. A marine non-slip aggregate can be broadcast over wet paint and sealed with an extra coat, or pre-mixed into the wet paint. Some deck coatings come with the aggregate already mixed in.
