MOORING ROPE 12-STRAND UHMWPE, AMSTEEL-BLUE 2"CIR X 200MTR 211607
IMPA 211607, AmSteel-Blue 12-strand HMPE rope 2 in circumference: it is 5/8 in or 16 mm diameter. Maker strengths, splice and how to order an equivalent.
What it is
IMPA 211607 is a 200 m length of AmSteel-Blue, a 12-strand single-braid rope of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, also called HMPE). It is 2 inches in circumference. The maker describes it as 100% Dyneema fibre with a Samthane coating, torque-free, with a specific gravity of 0.98, so it floats.[1]
In the maker’s table, 2 in circumference is 5/8 in diameter, or 16 mm in the metric table. The neighbours are 1-3/4" (211606, 9/16 in or 14 mm) and 2-1/4" (211608, 3/4 in or 18 mm). This is a small rope by mooring standards: the maker’s MEG4 mainline table starts at 1 in diameter, so 5/8 in has no MEG4 line rating.[1]
How to specify and order it
The maker publishes, for 5/8 in (16 mm): an average strength of 52,800 lb (24,000 kg), a minimum strength of 47,500 lb (21,600 kg) and an ISO 2307 strength of 23.9 t. It states that ISO figures are for unspliced rope and the others for spliced rope. Weight is 15.2 kg per 100 m, so a 200 m length is about 30 kg.[1]
The item name carries a brand. If an equivalent is acceptable, say so and specify it as 12-strand single-braid HMPE, 16 mm, coated, with a stated spliced minimum strength. The rope stretches very little, 0.46% at 10% of break strength according to the maker, which matters if it replaces a nylon or polyester line in the same job.[1]
Ask for eyes to be spliced by the maker or to its instructions. The maker lists a 12-strand Class II tuck bury splice for this rope, and its spliced strength figures assume a proper splice.[1]
Rules and approvals
Where this rope is used as a mooring line, MEG4 rates lines by line design break force: the minimum force at which a new, dry, spliced line breaks when tested to MEG4 Appendix B. The maker gives that rating only from 1 in diameter. For 5/8 in, use the spliced minimum strength and the job’s own safety factor.[1]
