HAWSER NYLON 8STRAND, 8"CIRX200MTR 210607

IMPA 210607, nylon 8-strand hawser 8 in circumference (about 64–65 mm) in 200 m: size conversion, spliced vs unspliced vs wet strength, tail use.

What it is

IMPA 210607 is a 200 m coil of 8-strand plaited nylon (polyamide) hawser, 8 inches in circumference. The same size in a 220 m coil is 210657. The next sizes in the 200 m series are 7-1/2" (210606) and 8-1/2" (210608).

Circumference divided by π gives the diameter: 8 ÷ π ≈ 2.55 in, about 65 mm. Rope makers round this to their own sizes. One maker’s 8-strand nylon table puts 8 in circumference against 2-5/8 in diameter and lists 64 mm and 65 mm in its metric table.[1]

How to specify and order it

Give the diameter in millimetres as well as the circumference, and the coil length. The same rope in a 220 m coil is a different code, 210657. If 220 m is acceptable, say so on the requisition.

Say which strength figure you are comparing. For its 8 in circumference 8-strand nylon, one maker publishes an unspliced ISO 2307 strength of 106 t, a spliced minimum of 209,000 lb (about 95 t), and a tail design break force of 178,000 lb (80.7 t). Its table states that ISO figures are unspliced and all others spliced, and the tail figure is for a new, wet, spliced tail tested to MEG4 Appendix B.[1]

If the rope will be cut into mooring tails, put the ship design MBL (MBLsd) on the requisition. Under MEG4 the tail design break force is 125–130% of the MBLsd, against 100–105% for the line itself. The ship can then check the offered tail rating.[2]

Rules and approvals

MEG4 defines line and tail strength as spliced values. Ships built to MEG3 or earlier may use ropes specified by unspliced strength, for example by the ISO 2307 method. Restating them as MEG4 values can leave the equipment below the ship design MBL, because unspliced tests do not count the strength lost at the splice.[2]

Questions buyers ask

What diameter is an 8 inch circumference nylon rope?
About 65 mm: 8 ÷ π ≈ 2.55 in. Makers list it as 2-5/8 in, or 64–65 mm, in their tables.
Which breaking strength should we compare between offers?
The same kind of figure from each supplier. An unspliced ISO 2307 value is higher than a spliced minimum, and a wet, spliced tail rating is lower again. Ask for spliced values to MEG4.
