COVER FOR BLANKET WITH FURTHER, DETAILS 150355
Blanket cover to your own size and fabric: the details to send, how it differs from 150288 and 150289, and where the FTP Code bedding fire test applies.
What it is
IMPA 150355 is a cover for a blanket, ordered by the piece, with the details given by the buyer. A blanket cover is a fabric case that the blanket goes into, like a duvet cover. The cover is washed instead of the blanket. It goes into the crew and passenger cabins with the rest of the bed linen.
How to specify and order it
Use this code when neither fixed size fits. 150288 is a cover for an 1800 × 2300 mm blanket (actual size 1800 × 2400 mm), and 150289 is for a 1400 × 2000 mm blanket (actual size 1500 × 2100 mm). Both are counted by the sheet. 150355 is counted by the piece and has no size, so the requisition has to carry it all.
State the blanket size the cover is for and the finished cover size, the fabric (for example cotton or polyester-cotton), the colour, the closure (open end, buttons, zip or envelope) and any company logo or marking. Say whether the cover must have a flame-retardant certificate (see below).
The catalogue has flame-retardant wool blankets as separate items (150353 white and 150354 beige, 1400 × 2000 mm). If the ship uses them, check that the cover does not undo the purpose and ask for the test report for the cover too.
Rules and approvals
The FTP Code, Part 9, is the IMO test for bedding components. It applies where bedding must resist ignition and the spread of flame, and passes an item as not readily ignitable if it shows no progressive smouldering or flaming ignition. Its list of bedding components includes blankets, quilts, bedspreads, pillows, mattresses, bed drapes, duvets and comforters. It excludes sheets, pillow cases, box springs, valances and bed curtains.[1]
Testing must use specimens of the final product, including any colour treatment. A colour change alone needs no new test, but a change of base product or treatment does. A blanket cover is not named in either list, so ask the flag or class which rule the ship’s bedding follows. The test is mainly required for beds and bedding on passenger-carrying ships, under SOLAS chapter II-2.[1][2]
Questions buyers ask
- Does a blanket cover need FTP Code fire testing?
- The FTP Code Part 9 test lists blankets, duvets and similar items as bedding components and excludes sheets and pillow cases. It does not name covers, so ask the flag or class. The requirement mainly applies to bedding on passenger-carrying ships.
