PILOTSEAL #172 non-asbestos jointing sheet, 2.0 × 1500 × 1500 mm: what to state, pressure–temperature charts and the asbestos-free paperwork.
What it is
IMPA 811284 is one sheet of PILOTSEAL #172 non-asbestos sheet packing, 2.0 mm thick and 1500 × 1500 mm. The crew cut gaskets from it for flanges, covers and casings.
How to specify and order it
The code fixes grade, thickness and sheet size. Order 2.0 mm when the joint was made with 2.0 mm or the drawing says so. Changing thickness changes the bolt-up and can change the fit of covers. Name the grade (#172) in full: a requisition that just says “PILOTSEAL” is not specific enough.
Do not read a sheet’s maximum temperature and maximum pressure as one combined rating. Makers of compressed fibre sheet publish pressure–temperature charts. One maker’s chart for its sheet marks zones where the material is usually satisfactory, where to ask the maker for advice, and where caution is needed, and notes that chemical compatibility should be considered in every case. For steam or hot oil, ask the supplier for the pressure–temperature data for this grade at 2.0 mm.[1]
Rules and approvals
SOLAS II-1/3-5, as amended by MSC.282(86): from 1 January 2011, new installation of materials containing asbestos is prohibited on all ships. It covers materials for the structure, machinery, electrical installations and equipment covered by SOLAS.[2]
MSC.1/Circ.1426/Rev.1: material repaired, replaced, maintained or added as a working part of the ship should be documented with an asbestos-free declaration, which the flag or recognised organisation audits at annual surveys. Packing with piping flanges is on its list of likely components. Ask for the asbestos-free declaration with every delivery of jointing sheet, and keep it on board.[3]

- Can a jointing sheet be used at its maximum temperature and maximum pressure together?
- Do not assume so. Makers of compressed fibre sheet publish pressure–temperature charts for that reason. Ask the supplier for the chart for this grade and thickness.
- Do we need an asbestos-free certificate for gasket sheet?
- Yes. Under MSC.1/Circ.1426/Rev.1, material fitted as a working part of the ship should be backed by an asbestos-free declaration, and flange packing is on its list of likely components.
