What it is
IMPA 811143 is black Viton rubber sheet, 1 mm thick and 1000 mm wide, sold by the metre (unit MTR). Viton is a Chemours brand of fluorocarbon elastomer, known by the material code FKM, which is used for O-rings, gaskets and moulded seals. Sheet like this is cut to size for gaskets.[1]
One seal maker describes FKM as having excellent resistance to high temperature, ozone, weather and ageing, and resistance to many acids, fuels, mineral and vegetable oils, greases and aliphatic, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons.[1]
How to specify and order it
The code fixes the material, colour, thickness and width. One metre of a 1000 mm wide sheet is about one square metre. The same family has the same black sheet in 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm (811144 to 811149), so check the gasket drawing or the old gasket before you pick 1 mm.
Ask how the sheet will be supplied. A cut length from a wider roll is not the same item as a 1000 mm sheet, so state the width and the number of metres you need.
Ask for the datasheet with hardness and temperature range, because compounds differ. The same seal maker gives a general FKM range of about -16 °C to 204 °C, but lists typical low limits from -26 °C to -48 °C depending on the FKM type. If the joint runs near those limits, state the service temperature on the enquiry.[1]
Check the fluid before you use FKM. Conventional FKM has poor resistance to amines, to many low molecular weight solvents such as ketones and some esters, and to phosphate ester fluids. Standard compounds may perform poorly in hot water and steam. For those services a specialty FKM grade or a different material is needed, so name the fluid when you order.[1]
