CABLE REEL EXTENSION AC220V, 30MTR 794396
30 m extension cable reel for 220 V AC: why the load rating drops when the cable is wound, the cable and cut-out to ask for, and how to order it.
What it is
IMPA 794396 is a 30 m extension cable reel for AC 220 V, supplied as a set. It sits between the 20 m (794395) and 50 m (794397) reels of the same voltage, and has a 110 V twin (794392). It takes mains power from a ship’s socket to tools, lamps and fans at the work site.
How to specify and order it
Ask for two load ratings, wound and unwound. Cable reels become extremely hot in the core of the reeled cable, so makers rate them lower when wound. One 20 m reel with 3 × 1.5 mm² cable is rated 16 A (3680 W) uncoiled but only 6 A (1380 W) coiled. Another, with 1.25 mm² cable, is rated 13 A fully unwound and 5 A fully wound. Unwind the cable fully before use.[1][2][3]
Ask for a thermal cut-out, which cuts the power if the reel overheats, and for the standard the reel is declared to: one maker’s 25 m reel lists BS EN 61242 and BS EN 50525. State the cable type and size. H07RN-F is a heavy-duty, rubber-sheathed, oil-resistant cable for medium mechanical stress in dry, damp and wet rooms and outdoors. A basic reel may use the lighter PVC H05VV-F.[2][3][4][1]
Give the plug and socket type to match the ship’s outlets and tools, and an IP rating if the reel is for deck or wet spaces. A basic reel with H05VV-F cable may be only IP20.[1]
Rules and approvals
COSWP: do not use makeshift plugs or sockets and do not overload circuits. In damp places or among large conductive surfaces, power tools should run at no more than 50 V AC, or through an isolating transformer or an RCD tripping at 30 mA or less. A 220 V reel is not the lead for those spaces unless that protection is in place.[5]
Questions buyers ask
- Why does a cable reel have a lower rating when wound?
- The core of the reeled cable gets extremely hot. Makers therefore rate a reel lower wound than unwound, for example 6 A instead of 16 A. Unwind it fully before use.
