ADAPTOR 3-FLAT PIN (BF) PLUG &, (A/B/C/O/SE/B3/O2) RECEPTACLE 792957
Adaptor with a BF plug, the type for UK sockets, and a socket for A/B/C/O/SE/B3/O2 plugs. What the letters mean, what it does not do, how to order.
What it is
IMPA 792957 is a plug adaptor, unit PCS. Its plug is type BF, the type one Japanese adaptor maker lists for the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, India and Saudi Arabia, among others. Its receptacle takes plugs of types A, B, C, O, SE, B3 and O2. It lets a crew member use a device with a foreign plug in a BF socket on board.[1]
The letters are the Japanese naming of plug types. Japanese adaptor makers sell single-type adaptors under the same letters, for example A, C, SE, O, B3 and BF.[1]
How to specify and order it
Pick the adaptor by the socket on board, not by the device. The plug end is what goes into the ship’s socket. 792957 has the BF plug. Its neighbours have other plug ends: 792958 a three round pin (B3) plug, 792959 a three flat pin (O2) plug, and 792960 a two flat pin (A) plug, each with a socket for the other types. If the cabins have BF sockets, order 792957 or one of the other codes whose plug is BF.
An adaptor changes the plug shape only. It does not change the voltage. Check the voltage range on the device’s rating label; if it does not cover the ship’s supply, the device needs a transformer as well.[2][1]
If you want an adaptor made to a recognised standard for UK-type sockets, ask for BS 8546. It covers travel adaptors compatible with the UK plug and socket system, including adaptors with USB charging circuits. Its scope is supplies of not more than 250 V a.c. single phase, 50–60 Hz, and adaptors rated from 5 A to 13 A.[2][3]
Rules and approvals
BS 8546:2016 covers the construction, rating, marking, dimensions and testing of travel adaptors compatible with the UK plug and socket system. Topics include socket-outlets that accept several types of plug pin, detachable pin parts, withdrawal force and the strength of the plug pins. The standard states that travel adaptors in its scope do not convert voltage. It excludes BS 1363-3 adaptors and BS 1363-5 conversion plugs.[2][3]
Questions buyers ask
- Does IMPA 792957 convert 230 V to 110 V?
- No. A plug adaptor changes the plug shape only. If the voltage range on the device’s rating label does not cover the supply, the device needs a transformer.
- What is a BF plug?
- BF is a Japanese plug-type letter. One Japanese adaptor maker lists its BF adaptor for the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, India and Saudi Arabia, among others.
