LAMP NAVIGATION E-26, 24V 60W 790402

E-26 screw navigation lamp, 24 V 60 W, for lanterns wired for 24 V: E26 vs E27, 40 W vs 60 W, and what to check before ordering.

What it is

IMPA 790402 is a 24 V, 60 W navigation-light bulb with an E-26 Edison screw cap.

It suits lanterns wired for 24 V. Lanterns on 110–115 V or 220 V mains take a different bulb with the same cap. Those are separate codes, 790404 and 790406.

How to specify and order it

Check the cap, the voltage and the wattage on the lantern nameplate. E-26 and E-27 are different cap sizes. If a supplier offers a 24 V 60 W bulb with an E27 cap against this code, accept it only if the lantern maker allows it. If the lantern needs a bayonet cap, order the B-22 version, 790412.

Do not replace a 60 W bulb with the 40 W bulb, 790401, to save stock. A lantern’s visible range comes from its luminous intensity. Annex I gives 94 cd as the minimum for 6 miles and 52 cd for 5 miles, so a weaker lamp may leave the light below its required range.[1]

Order enough spares for every lantern that takes this lamp, main and stand-by. Some lanterns are sold without bulbs. Glamox, for example, says the bulb for its 70M double-lens masthead light has to be ordered separately.[2]

Rules and approvals

COLREG Annex I section 10 requires electric navigation lights to keep at least the minimum intensity from 5° above to 5° below the horizontal, and 60 % of it out to 7.5°. Section 14 leaves the construction and installation of lights to the flag State’s authority. The lamp is part of what the lantern was approved with, so order the type the lantern maker specifies.[1]

Questions buyers ask

Can I use an E27 bulb instead of an E26 navigation bulb?
Only if the lantern maker allows it. E26 and E27 are different cap sizes. Match the voltage and wattage exactly as well.
Why is the 24 V navigation bulb ordered separately from the 220 V one?
The same E-26 cap is made for 24 V, 110–115 V and 220 V, and each voltage has its own code. Copy the voltage from the lantern nameplate.
