DIAPHRAGM PUMP AIR-OPERATED, WILDEN PRO-FLO PS8 ALUMI CASE 591609

WILDEN PS8 2" aluminium air-operated diaphragm pump: up to 700–723 l/min, 8.6 bar max air, 6.4 mm solids. Model code, elastomers, how to order 591609.

What it is

IMPA 591609 is the WILDEN PRO-FLO PS8 air-operated double-diaphragm pump with an aluminium casing. The maker’s manual describes the PS8 metal as a 51 mm (2") pump. It is air-operated, positive displacement and self-priming: compressed air pushes one diaphragm while the shaft pulls the other in, and check balls in the manifolds make the liquid flow one way.[1]

It runs on compressed air and passes solids: the maximum size is 6.4 mm (¼"). It has a 2" inlet, a 2" outlet and a ¾" air inlet. The aluminium version ships at 35 kg, against 53 kg for 316 stainless steel and 49 kg for cast iron.[1]

How to specify and order it

The IMPA code fixes the model and the aluminium wetted path, not the elastomers. Wilden builds the PS8 to a designation code that also sets the outer piston, air chambers, centre block, air valve, diaphragms, valve balls, valve seats and specialty options such as BSP threads (0014) or the Wil-Gard leak sensor at 110 V (0100) or 220 V (0103). Give the full designation from the nameplate of the pump being replaced, or state the liquid and temperature so the supplier can pick the elastomers.[1]

Elastomers set the temperature range. The manual lists, for example, Buna-N at -12 °C to 82 °C, Neoprene at -18 °C to 93 °C, EPDM at -51 °C to 138 °C, FKM at -40 °C to 177 °C and polyurethane at -12 °C to 66 °C. It warns that chemicals can lower these limits and that every wetted part must suit the liquid.[1]

Performance depends on the fit. The rubber-fitted PS8 metal gives up to 700 l/min (185 gpm) with 7.2 m dry and 9.0 m wet suction lift; the TPE-fitted version 719 l/min; the full-stroke PTFE-fitted version 723 l/min with 6.3 m dry lift. Displacement is 2.6 l per stroke (2.4 l with PTFE). These figures are with water. As a worked example, the maker gives 329 l/min against a 2.1 bar discharge head with 4.1 bar air and 75 Nm³/h air consumption. The air supply must not exceed 8.6 bar (125 psig).[1]

Do not mix it up with the neighbours. 591603 is the WILDEN P8 aluminium pump and 591614 the P-8 plastic body; 591608 is the PRO-FLO PS4; 591604 is the PS15 in aluminium and 591606 the PS20 in cast iron. Spares such as diaphragms, balls and seats are ordered to the pump’s designation, not to the IMPA code.

Rules and approvals

For a hazardous area, the maker’s designation system has a separate ATEX model, XPS8 (Pro-Flo SHIFT ATEX), alongside the standard PS8. If the pump will work in a gas-dangerous zone, order the ATEX model by its designation and ask for its certificate; do not assume the standard PS8 is suitable.[1]

The manual’s precautions: do not exceed 8.6 bar air supply or 82 °C air inlet temperature; use an in-line air filter, with 5 micron recommended, and a needle valve and regulator; fit a strainer on the intake so the rated solids size is not exceeded; use non-collapsible reinforced suction hose; and wear safety glasses, because if a diaphragm ruptures, liquid may come out of the air exhaust. Standard Pro-Flo SHIFT models must not be used submerged; the single-point exhaust version can be.[1]

Questions buyers ask

What size is the WILDEN PS8 pump?
The PS8 metal is a 51 mm (2") pump with 2" inlet and outlet and a ¾" air inlet, rated up to about 700–723 l/min with water depending on the elastomer fit.
What air pressure does a WILDEN PS8 need?
The maker’s limit is 8.6 bar (125 psig) air supply. Its worked example pumps 329 l/min against 2.1 bar discharge head with 4.1 bar air.
