DISINFECTANT DRINKING WATER, HADEX 10LTR 550667
Hadex drinking-water disinfectant in a 10 litre can: 500 m³ at the normal dose, 250 m³ at the extra dose, 50 m³ as a shock dose. Sizing and ordering.
What it is
IMPA 550667 is Hadex drinking-water disinfectant in a 10 litre can. Hadex is a liquid product based on free chlorine. It is added to the fresh-water tanks through the filling pipe or the tank opening, or by an automatic dosing unit controlled by a flow meter. The maker sells it in 1, 2.5, 10 and 25 litre polycans. The other sizes are the neighbouring codes 550665, 550666 and 550668.[1]
At the maker’s normal dosage one 10 litre can treats 500 m³, so this size suits a ship that bunkers or makes a few hundred cubic metres of water between store deliveries.[1]
How to specify and order it
Size the order from the maker’s three standard dosages. At the normal dosage, 1 litre per 50,000 litres of clear water, one 10 litre can treats 500,000 litres, or 500 m³. At the extra dosage for water of inferior or doubtful quality, 1:25,000, it treats 250 m³. At the shock dosage, 1:5,000, it treats only 50 m³. The shock dose is for suspected contamination, epidemic conditions and the first disinfection of tanks and pipelines after repairs or renewals.[1]
Plan stock for both routine and shock use. After a tank repair, a 100 m³ tank and its pipelines need 20 litres at the shock dose, which is two cans. At the normal dose the same 100 m³ needs only 2 litres, so a 1 litre or 2.5 litre can may be easier to dose by hand on a small ship.[1]
The maker gives a shelf life of 18 months under normal conditions (25 °C) and three years if stored cool, at 6 °C or below. Do not order more than the ship will use in that time. Water dosed at the normal rate is ready to drink after about 30 minutes.[1]
Rules and approvals
The maker lists approvals including the Dutch Ministry of Health (Ctgb registration No. 9574N), the UK Health and Safety Executive, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH), Germany’s BfR (N-69753), Austria’s BMLFUW and Belgium’s FOD (15917B). It also names DSI, DOT and NMD among the maritime authorities that approve it. If the flag or the company asks for a particular approval, state it on the order.[1]
Some flags require tested drinking water. Portugal’s Circular No 74 is one example. Tanked drinking water must be tested at least once a year at the final dispensing point. If the crew test it themselves with a kit, they must test every six months. If a result fails, the tanks and delivery pipes are drained, cleaned and sterilised before they are refilled.[2]
