SAFETY HANDLAMP RECHARGEABLE, MICA IL-640 EM NIMH EMERGENCY 330656

MICA IL-640 EM NiMH rechargeable hand lamp with emergency light: run times, the ILC4 charger, what the EM function does, and why it is not an Ex lamp.

What it is

The MICA IL-640 is a rechargeable LED hand lamp made by ATEXOR Oy, whose R&D and manufacturing teams are based in Finland. It has four Cree LEDs, a 6 V NiMH battery and an IP67 enclosure. The maker gives 600 lumen for 8 hours at full power and 160 lumen for 24 hours at low power, and a weight of 1.4 kg with the NiMH battery.[1]

The “EM” is the emergency light function, which the maker offers as an option on the IL-640. It is what separates this code from 330655, the plain IL-640 NiMH. ATEXOR says a MICA lamp with the EM function lights up during a power failure and lights the area in front of it. For its IL-800 EM lamps it explains that the lamp does this while it sits in its charger and detects the outage. That makes it a lamp to keep in a powered charger at a fixed point, such as the engine room, steering gear or a workshop, where people need light the moment the power goes.[1][2]

How to specify and order it

Order the lamp and its charger together, as the code is the lamp only (unit PCS). The maker says the IL-640 works with the MICA ILC4 charger, which can recharge an empty lamp even at +40 °C. Its catalogue lists the ILC4-VAC, fed from the mains (85–265 VAC), the ILC4 for 12–24 VDC, and multi-station charger racks such as the CR-C5. Other IMPA codes in this family cover the chargers. Check the charger’s model name on the quote.[1]

The maker gives an operating temperature of -20 °C to +40 °C. When the battery is getting low, the beam starts to blink at 15-second intervals, so tell the crew what the blinking means.[1]

Rules and approvals

ATEXOR lists the IL-640 in its catalogue of non-Ex professional hand lamps, and its MICA lamps come in both Ex-protected and non-Ex versions. Its Ex-certified hand lamps are in a separate catalogue. There, the IL-800 Zone 1 carries ATEX certificate TÜV 10 ATEX 7879 and IECEx certificate IECEx TUR 11.0009 for gas zones 1 and 2. Treat the IL-640 EM as a lamp for safe areas. If the lamp is for a hazardous area, ask for the Ex certificate or order an Ex-certified model.[1][2]

This matters for the fire-fighter’s outfit. The FSS Code calls for an approved electric safety lamp with a minimum burning period of 3 h, and on tankers and in hazardous areas it must be explosion-proof. Do not buy this code as the outfit lamp for a tanker unless the supplier shows that approval.[3]

Questions buyers ask

What does EM mean on the MICA IL-640?
Emergency. The maker offers the EM function as an option on the IL-640: a MICA lamp with it lights up during a power failure. The plain IL-640 (IMPA 330655) is the code without it.
Is the MICA IL-640 EM explosion-proof?
No. ATEXOR lists the IL-640 among its non-Ex hand lamps. MICA’s Ex-certified hand lamps are other models, such as the IL-800 Zone 1. Ask for the Ex certificate before using any lamp in a hazardous area.
