DETECTOR GAS COMBINATION MSA, ALTAIR 5X W/WHEELMARK 213.050 330596
MSA ALTAIR 5X multigas detector, MED wheel mark (213.050): sensor set, pump, the IR version for inert tanks, calibration gas and bump tests.
What it is
The MSA ALTAIR 5X is a portable multigas detector with a built-in sampling pump. It takes up to four sensors and shows up to five gases, because one Two-Tox sensor reads both CO and H2S, or CO and NO2. A typical set is combustible gas, oxygen, CO and H2S, the four gases SOLAS XI-1/7 (in force 1 July 2016) requires a ship’s portable instrument to measure before entry into enclosed spaces. The maker gives a nominal run time of 20 hours for that set with pump at room temperature.[1][2][4]
The “213.050” in the IMPA name is the MED number. The EC Declaration of Conformity in MSA’s ALTAIR 5X manual states conformity with the Marine Equipment Directive under EC-type examination certificate 213.050, notified body 0736. This code is the wheel-marked version for ships that need MED equipment.[1]
How to specify and order it
State the sensors and the combustible calibration. The code names the model, not the sensor set. MSA lists combustible (LEL or % volume), O2, CO, H2S, SO2, NH3, Cl2 and VOC sensors depending on configuration. The catalytic combustible sensor can be set up for several LEL definitions: methane at 4.4 % or 5 % by volume, propane, butane, pentane or hydrogen. The same 1.45 % methane test gas then reads 33 % LEL on the methane 4.4 % setting and 58 % LEL on the pentane setting. Ask for the setting the ship’s procedures use.[2][1]
Choose between this code and 330597, the ALTAIR 5X IR. The catalytic sensor needs more than 10 % oxygen to read correctly, and MSA says only IR sensors are acceptable in inert atmospheres. The IR version takes up to five sensors, including one infrared sensor for CO2 or for specific combustible gases up to 100 % by volume. For gas-freeing inerted cargo tanks, that is the version to ask for.[1]
Order the consumables with the instrument. MSA recommends a bump test before each day’s use and a full calibration periodically and after a failed bump test. Its four-gas calibration cylinder (58 l: 1.45 % CH4, 15.0 % O2, 60 ppm CO, 20 ppm H2S) is part 10053022, used with a demand-flow regulator. Use only MSA-approved sampling lines, never silicone tubing, and allow at least 3 seconds per metre of line for the sample to arrive.[1]
Rules and approvals
Portable oxygen analysis and gas detection equipment is item MED/3.30b under the Marine Equipment Directive, updated by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1533 from 23 September 2025. The MED declaration in the 2015 manual cites the older Directive 2010/68/EC. Ask the supplier for the current Declaration of Conformity and MED certificate for the configuration supplied.[3][1]
The same declaration gives ATEX certificates FTZU 08 ATEX 0340 X and FTZU 09 ATEX 0006 X. With the combustible sensor fitted, the marking is II 2G Ex db ia mb IIC T4 Gb, for −40 °C to +50 °C, IP65. MSA warns against changing the battery or charging it in a hazardous location. MSA notes that approvals vary with configuration and part number, so check the label.[1][2]
MSA’s manual also states the instrument’s limits. Do not use it for combustible readings in vapours from liquids with a flash point above 38 °C, as readings may be low. Do not use it for combustible dusts or mists. Do not use catalytic readings in oxygen-deficient or inert atmospheres.[1]
Questions buyers ask
- What does 213.050 mean on the ALTAIR 5X?
- It is the MED EC-type examination certificate number given in MSA’s EC Declaration of Conformity for the ALTAIR 5X, with notified body 0736.
- ALTAIR 5X or 5X IR for tanker cargo tanks?
- For inerted tanks, the 5X IR. Its infrared sensor can read combustible gas up to 100 % by volume. The catalytic sensor of the standard 5X needs more than 10 % oxygen, and MSA allows only IR sensors in inert atmospheres.
