What it is
IMPA 174240 is a roll paper towel carrying an eco label, in the economic grade, 200 mm wide, packed six rolls to a box. It is ordered by the BOX. The family has four codes: economic 200 × 180 (174240), economic 200 × 300 (174248), standard 200 × 180 (174249) and standard 200 × 300 (174250).
An eco claim on paper towel can rest on recycled fibre or on forest certification. The US EPA recommends that public buyers set paper towels at 40–100 % total recovered fibre, with 40–60 % postconsumer fibre. Under the FSC labels, "FSC Recycled" means 100 % recycled material. "FSC Mix" means a mixture of FSC-certified, recycled and controlled-wood material. "FSC 100%" means all of the material comes from FSC-certified forests.[1][2]
How to specify and order it
Check the roll length. The catalogue name gives the size as "200MMX180MM", but a roll 180 mm long makes no sense. The other roll towels in the catalogue give their length in metres, for example 200 mm × 137 m (174231). Ask the supplier to confirm the length on each roll, in metres, so that offers can be compared per box.
Choose the grade on purpose. "Economic" and "standard" are separate codes in the same two sizes. Ask for the ply and the basis weight (g/m²) of both before you swap one for the other, and keep to one grade across the fleet so the dispensers and the crew see the same product.
Match the roll to the dispenser on board. The plastic holder for 200 mm rolled towel is 174236, and the 280 mm holder (174237) takes the wider rolls. The roll-towel dispenser 174255 is listed as type L:300 m. If the ship uses one, the 300 size (174248 or 174250) may be the better fit. Folded eco towel is a different family (174238, 174239).
If the company buys to a recycled-content or FSC rule, write it on the order: the minimum postconsumer fibre, or the FSC label wanted. Ask for the FSC certificate holder’s details, which can be checked on FSC’s certificate search.[1][2]
Rules and approvals
Used paper towels are garbage under MARPOL Annex V. Paper and rags are among the items whose discharge into the sea is prohibited, so they are kept on board and landed at a port reception facility. The Annex V guidelines also ask ships to work with suppliers to cut garbage at source, including avoiding disposable towels and rags where possible and avoiding supplies packed in plastic.[3]
