PLASTIC BAG BLACK, 500X400X1300MM 50'S 174176

Large black plastic garbage bag, 500x400x1300 mm, packet of 50. How it differs from 174169, what MARPOL Annex V says about plastic bags, how to order.

What it is

IMPA 174176 is a large black plastic bag, 500 x 400 x 1300 mm, in a packet of 50 (unit PKT). It is the biggest bag in its group and is used as a liner for large garbage bins and drums, and for bagging garbage that is kept on board until it can go ashore.

Garbage on board is collected in marked receptacles as it is generated. The IMO guidelines name drums, metal bins, cans, container bags and wheelie bins as the usual receptacles. They should be secured, lidded on open decks and clearly marked by graphics, shape, size or location.[1]

How to specify and order it

The name gives three dimensions where its neighbours give two. The black 174169 is 762 x 864 mm, 65 litres, and the transparent bags 174171 to 174175 run from 250 x 350 mm to 800 x 900 mm, flat. The code does not say which of the three figures is the width, the side gusset or the length, nor the film thickness. Ask the supplier to confirm the layout and the thickness, and check the bag against the bin it must line.

Order by packets of 50, not by single bags. Count the bins that take this size, how often they are changed and how long garbage is held between ports. Black bags hide the contents; if your garbage management plan sorts some streams into clear bags, order the transparent sizes for those.

Rules and approvals

MARPOL Annex V prohibits discharging all plastics into the sea, and the IMO table of discharge rules lists plastic garbage bags among the garbage whose discharge is prohibited. When plastic is mixed with other garbage, the mixture must be treated as if it were all plastic. So a bag of food waste that is allowed overboard must be emptied, and the bag kept on board.[1]

The guidelines recommend separating non-recyclable plastics, rags, recyclables (cooking oil, glass, aluminium cans, paper and cardboard, wood, metal, plastics), e-waste, and hazardous garbage such as oily rags, light bulbs, chemicals and batteries. Some governments require foreign food waste to be incinerated, sterilised or double bagged, and kept separate for port reception facilities.[1]

Questions buyers ask

Can food waste go overboard in the plastic bag?
No. MARPOL Annex V prohibits discharging plastics, and plastic mixed with other garbage is treated as all plastic. Empty the bag and keep it on board.
