Chairs Swivel

Chairs Swivel is a group of 2 IMPA-coded items (codes 471503–471504) under Chairs in the Stationery section (IMPA 47). All of them are priced per piece.

Buying guide

This group holds the swivel chair on a pipe frame, with or without arms — the desk chair of the ship’s office, the cargo control room, the chief engineer’s and master’s offices and cabin desks.

The chief steward or the master raises them when a chair breaks or its upholstery wears through. Because a ship moves in a seaway, a chair that rolls or tips is a hazard as well as a comfort item, which is why where it will stand matters as much as the model.[2]

How to specify it

State chair or armchair, the space it is for, the upholstery and frame finish, and the colour, plus the quantity. If the chair is for a cabin, mess or office that must match existing furniture, send a photo of the chair being replaced.

Ask for surfaces that suit a ship: MLC guidance is that furniture in sleeping rooms be of smooth, hard material not liable to warp or corrode, and that the tops of mess-room tables and seats be of damp-resistant material.[1]

For anyone working long periods at a screen, COSWP’s posture guidance asks for a seat height that supports the front and back of the thighs and a back that supports the lower back, so ask for an adjustable seat height and backrest.[2]

Rules and certificates

MLC, 2006 Guideline B3.1.6 says mess rooms should have tables and appropriate seats, fixed or movable, enough for the greatest number of seafarers likely to use them at one time; Guideline B3.1.5 asks for furniture of smooth, hard material not liable to warp or corrode.[1]

COSWP’s good-housekeeping advice, because all ships move in a seaway, includes the safe and secure stowage of loose items — which includes movable chairs in heavy weather.[2]

Questions buyers ask

Do chairs on a ship have to be fixed to the deck?
MLC guidance allows mess-room seats to be fixed or movable. Movable chairs should be stowed or secured when the ship is working in a seaway, as COSWP advises for all loose items.
Chair or armchair?
The catalogue lists both on the same pipe-frame swivel base; match what is already in the space, or choose the armchair where the user sits for long periods.
