What does King Fahad Industrial Port, Yanbu handle?
King Fahd Industrial Port in Yanbu, established in 1980 on the Red Sea 326 km north of Jeddah Islamic Port, exports crude oil, refined products and petrochemicals. It has 34 berths and a handling capacity of 210 million tonnes a year, and takes ships of up to 500,000 tonnes.[3]
—Yanbu North Crude Terminal (Saudi Aramco): four loading berths, 61 to 64, for tankers up to 500,000 dwt at 32 m below LAT; up to 130,000 barrels an hour per berth.[1]
—Yanbu South Terminal: three crude berths — 101 and 103 for 35,000–320,000 dwt, 102 for 100,000–500,000 dwt — with a maximum sailing draught of 27.0 m.[1]
—Yanbu North Refined Product Terminal: outer berths 91–92 at up to 16 m and inner berths 93–94 at up to 11.5 m; refinery products loaded at Yanbu include diesel, fuel oil, kerosene, MTBE, naphtha, PG and BAS.[1]
—General cargo and containers: Mawani awarded the multipurpose terminal at King Fahd Industrial Port Yanbu to Red Sea Gateway Terminal on a 20-year build-operate-transfer contract in June 2025, with new ship-to-shore and RTG cranes.[4]
How is Yanbu’s pipeline port operating in 2026?
Yanbu is the western terminus of the 1,200 km East–West crude pipeline, rated at 7 million barrels a day, which normally carries about 70% of Saudi crude exports to the Red Sea. After Houthi attacks earlier in September 2026 the line was running at low rates; operators expected about 40% capacity back within days and a full restart in six to eight weeks (ENGINE, citing Kpler, 24 September 2026).[5]
—Entry is controlled: no ship enters or navigates within harbour limits without the approval of the King Fahad Industrial Port Control Center, which is manned 24 hours; call it on VHF 16 or 11 two hours before arrival.[1]
—Pilotage is compulsory at all Saudi Aramco terminals; at Yanbu, pilotage and marine operations are provided by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani). Pilots do not board in waves over 3 m or winds above 30 knots.[1]
—Berth assignment depends on nomination date, arrival time, product, ship size and berth availability; ships not berthed on arrival wait in the anchorages inside harbour limits.[1]
What must a tanker calling at Yanbu arrange?
—A Saudi shipping agent before entering Saudi territorial waters, and ETA messages at 72, 48 and 24 hours; the agent handles provisions, repairs, medical care and crew changes. Aramco’s listed Yanbu agents are licensed for maritime support, chandlery and bunker services.[2,1]
—Bunkers at the berth: fuel oil at the North Terminal, fuel oil and diesel at the Refinery Terminal, none at the South Terminal. Fresh water is not available at the Aramco terminals.[1]
—Bunkers by barge: Aramco Trading Company began commercial bunkering at the port in June 2021 with the Energy Ministry, Customs and Mawani (up to 150,000 t a month); Minerva Bunkering supplies VLSFO, HSFO and MGO at Yanbu with ATC, duty-free for international ships.[6,7]
—Slops: at the North Crude Terminal the fuel-oil loading arms also receive ships’ slops into the SAMREF refinery slop reception facility — tell the agent and terminal before arrival if you need to land slops.[1]
—Provisions and stores for the loading call: post a requirement and chandlers serving Yanbu answer with sealed bids — suppliers never see the vessel’s name until award. If you supply tankers at King Fahad Industrial Port, be the first supplier in.
