What kind of port is Kuantan Port, and what does it handle?
Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd is 60:40 owned by IJM Corporation Berhad and Beibu Gulf Holding (Hong Kong). The port was established in 1974 under the Kuantan Port Authority, fully operational from 1984 and privatised to KPC in 1998; the New Deep Water Terminal (NDWT) opened Phase 1A in 2018 and Phase 1B in 2019, and in 2022 the port received its deepest and heaviest vessel, of 180,000 DWT.[1]
—Kuantan Port 1 (KP1): 11 multipurpose berths for break and dry bulk, 4 liquid berths and 4 liquid chemical berths, all with a 12 m maximum draught and vessels up to 55,000 DWT.[2]
—Containers at KP1: 3 berths over 600 m, 6 container cranes and 10 RTGs, capacity 500,000 TEU a year, 114 reefer points and a Class 2 dangerous-goods yard.[3]
—New Deep Water Terminal (KP2) Phase 1: a 1 km multipurpose berth at 16 m for dry bulk and break-bulk, vessels up to 180,000 DWT, 42.5 ha of yard, two ship unloaders of 2,000 t/h each and stacker-reclaimers; KPC puts NDWT handling at about 7 million tonnes a year. A Phase 2 berth at 18 m is planned, not built.[4]
—Kuantan Port has a Free Commercial Zone in which trading, grading, break-bulking, repacking and relabelling are permitted.[5]
What are Kuantan’s approach, pilot stations and anchorages?
The Kuantan port limit covers 957 km² (279 nmi²) including both pilot stations, the anchorages, the approach channel and berths. KPC gives the dredged depths as 17.0 m in the approach channel, 12.1 m in the KP1 basin and 16.0 m in the KP2 basin, with an 18.0 m berth pocket at KP2.[6]
—Inner pilot station: 3°56.3′ N 103°28.3′ E, for vessels drawing less than 12.0 m bound for the southern basin (KP1), marked by a fairway buoy at 3°55.6′ N 103°29.2′ E.[6]
—Outer pilot station: 3°55.9′ N 103°33.0′ E, for deep-draught vessels drawing more than 12.0 m bound for the northern basin (NDWT), marked by a fairway buoy at 3°55.8′ N 103°33.0′ E.[6]
—Radio: “Kuantan Port Control” on VHF channels 12 and 16; the pilot boat and launch boat also listen on 12 or 16.[6]
—Anchorages: Northern (general purpose, no LOA or draught limit), Quarantine (awaiting pratique), Petroleum (tankers with petroleum, palm oil or chemicals), Man of War, Explosive, Deep Water (vessels over 11.2 m draught bound for the NDWT), Special Activity, and an ISPS holding area. The anchorage given depends on permission from the Marine Department, the Kuantan Port Authority and Port Control, and on the vessel’s LOA and draught.[6]
What must a vessel calling at Kuantan arrange?
—Tugs: KPC’s recommended minimum for berthing and unberthing is 2 tugs below 225 m LOA, 3 tugs for 226–260 m and 4 tugs above 260 m; the pilot may add or remove a tug. The port’s tugs have 45 t and 50 t bollard pull.[6]
—Launch boat: KPC runs a launch boat (up to 12 passengers) on request, booked through its MTOS system or by cash payment at the Marine Services office — useful for crew and small deliveries at anchor.[6]
—Rules: navigation follows the Port Authorities Act, the Merchant Shipping Ordinance, the Kuantan Port Authority’s rules, the pilotage by-laws, COLREGs and IALA buoyage system A.[6]
—Provisions, deck and engine stores, spares and fresh supplies to KP1, the NDWT or the anchorages: post a requirement and suppliers serving Kuantan answer with sealed bids; suppliers never see the vessel’s name until award. If you serve Kuantan Port, activate Kuantan.
