What kind of port is Safaga, and what does it handle?

Greater Safaga is two facilities: the commercial port under the Red Sea Ports Authority, and — 6 km south — the Safaga (Abu Tartur) mining port built by the state specifically to ship phosphate to world markets, with a 260 m export pier at 14 m draught, a 1,500 t/h shiploader and a rail link to the Abu Tartur mines.[1]

—The commercial port works phosphate and foodstuff exports against aluminium (alumina), grain, coal and vehicle imports; alumina for the Nag Hammadi smelter is received at Safaga and trucked north.[5,4]

—Ferry role: ro-pax services to Saudi Arabia, heavy in the Hajj season.[2]

—New capacity, as of June 2026: trial operations began at the Noatum Ports Safaga Terminal (AD Ports Group, 30-year concession) — 1,000 m of quay at 17 m depth for dry bulk, general cargo, liquids, containers and vehicles.[3]

What vessel sizes and drafts can Safaga take?

—Published maxima by trade: breakbulk to 290 m LOA at 9.1 m draft; passenger vessels to 220 m at 12.8 m; bulkers to 260 m at 14.0 m. Charts BA 2375; Red Sea & Gulf of Aden Pilot (NP64). ISPS compliant.[2]

—Fresh water, medical facilities and minor repairs are available; the nearest major airport is Hurghada International, ~51 km north.[2]

What must a vessel calling at Safaga arrange?

—Bunkers: no local supply is documented — published guidance says bunkers are available with notice from Suez by barge. Plan accordingly.[2]

—Provisions and stores: post a requirement and suppliers serving Safaga answer with sealed bids. Safaga has no dedicated chandlery page anywhere on the web — the first supplier to activate it owns the port’s requests.

—Mining-port position (official): 26°44′N 033°57′E; roughly 60 km south of Hurghada and 445 km from Cairo.[1,2]

—Commercial-port throughput, as of 2024: 5.615 million tonnes (2.23M imports / 3.385M exports).[6]

—When a delivery runs late, customs clearance of the goods is the usual cause, not the supplier.
