What kind of port is Nuweiba, and what does it handle?

The Red Sea Ports Authority describes Nuweiba as a modern port built in 1985 to link the Arab East and West and Asia with Africa. It carries passengers, cars, cargo and refrigerated agricultural produce on the regular Nuweiba–Aqaba line — about three hours by ferry. The port sits on the west coast of the Gulf of Aqaba, about 168 km north of Sharm El Sheikh and 64 km south of Taba.[1]

—Design capacity: 1.9 million tonnes of general cargo and 1.7 million passengers a year, 30,000 triptyque cars and 150,000 trucks. Working hours: 24 hours a day.[1]

—The ferry line: AB Maritime (Arab Bridge Maritime), founded in 1985 by the governments of Jordan, Egypt and Iraq, runs daily passenger sailings and regular truck, car, general and refrigerated cargo sailings between Aqaba and Nuweiba, including pilgrim traffic to Saudi Arabia.[4,1]

—Activity: on 5 April 2026 the RSPA media centre reported that Nuweiba had handled 5,800 tonnes of cargo and 412 trucks on shuttle voyages by four vessels.[5]

What are Nuweiba’s approach depth, berths and limits?

—RSPA gives a navigation-channel depth of 20 m and three passenger and general-cargo berths of 94 m, 113 m and 178 m — a usable berthing length of 385 m (450 m including service areas). The tidal range is 1.3 to 2.3 m and prevailing winds are north to north-westerly.[1]

—Ship size: the WFP Logistics Cluster gives the largest vessel as 120 m LOA and 7.32 m maximum draught, with berths 1 and 2 used by passenger ferries and berth 3 by general cargo; Findaport gives 3,980 DWT at 7.3 m draught for dry cargo and 8.0 m draught for ro-ro.[6,7]

—Pilotage is compulsory, with pilot monitoring by VHF radio and radar; the port works VHF channel 12. Findaport reports pilotage available 24 hours, and the Logistics Cluster says berthing and unberthing can be done at any time of day.[1,7,6]

—Towage and safety: RSPA lists the tug Taba 2 (25 t bollard pull) with fire pumps, medical first aid and isolation, and marine-pollution response equipment. Nuweiba has been ISPS-compliant since December 2012.[1]

What can a vessel calling at Nuweiba arrange?

—Supplies: RSPA lists fresh water, gas oil and diesel, light and heavy fuel, engine oils and stores, provisions and foodstuffs, spare parts, supply boats and fumigation at the port, plus reception of dirty water. The port’s fresh water comes from its own desalination plants of 100 m³ and 300 m³ a day.[1]

—Repairs: a technical workshop handles light repairs only.[1]

—Ship waste: RSPA publishes its ship-waste management plan for its ports with Decision No. 74 of 2018, the list of approved contractors and oily-waste reception companies, the advance-notification form for waste delivery and the standard waste delivery receipt. RSPA’s cleaning fee is 5% of port dues for all ships except general-cargo ships, which pay 3%.[2,1]

—Working hours: RSPA has announced that all its ports, Nuweiba among them, work 24 hours a day, seven days a week.[3]

—Provisions, stores, spares and fresh water for a call at Nuweiba: post a requirement and suppliers serving Nuweiba answer with sealed bids; suppliers never see the vessel’s name until award. If you supply ships at Nuweiba, activate Nuweiba.

Where is the guide to Aqaba, across the Gulf from Nuweiba?

—This page (EGNUW) covers Nuweiba in South Sinai. The ferry’s other end, Aqaba in Jordan, has its own port guide.

From the supply desk

—Supply works the same way at every Egyptian port. The requisition needs to reach the supplier about four hours before the vessel arrives — a separate step from the pre-arrival notice the agent files for the vessel itself.

—When a delivery runs late, customs clearance of the goods is the usual cause, not the supplier.
