Guide · Supplying Gulf ports

Supplying ships in the Gulf: Fujairah, Jebel Ali, Khor Fakkan and Saudi ports

Each Gulf port sells a different call. Fujairah is an anchorage where tankers wait, bunker and take stores by boat; Jebel Ali and Khor Fakkan are container hubs with working anchorages; Jeddah and Dammam are Saudi gateways where everything runs through an agent. A supplier who knows which kind of call it is pricing — and who carries the goods the last mile — quotes better and delivers on time.

Five ports, five kinds of call

What each port publishes that matters to a supplier[1,2,9,10,14,13,15,17,20]

From the port and operator pages cited; none of these ports publishes what ships order by category.

No port in the region publishes order data by product, so the rest of this section reads demand from the traffic. That reading is ours.

  • Fujairah: tankers waiting for orders or bunkering, at anchor for days, with crew changes — Fujairah was named one of eight global crew-change hubs in 2020. Expect provisions, deck and engine stores, owner-sent spares and fresh water, all by boat. See Fujairah.[8]
  • Jebel Ali: container ships on tight schedules and the trade of the JAFZA free zone behind them; short windows, so ex-stock lines and bonded stores delivered to the berth. See Jebel Ali.[11]
  • Khor Fakkan: Gulftainer describes it as the only fully operational UAE terminal outside Hormuz, serving the upper Gulf, the Indian subcontinent and East Africa — transshipment calls plus anchorage work. See Khor Fakkan.[12]
  • Jeddah: container, reefer and grain traffic, with pilgrim ships and livestock in the weeks before Hajj; the season follows the Hijri calendar, so it moves each year. See Jeddah.[15,16]
  • Dammam: a ship repair facility with two floating docks for ships up to 215 m sits inside the port — yard stays mean spares and technical stores over weeks, not hours. See Dammam.[19]

How launch delivery to a ship at anchor works

At Fujairah the anchorage is served out of the port’s service harbour by more than 107 utility boats owned and operated by shipping agencies and diving companies. The harbour lists loading of stores and spare parts for supply at the anchorage, covered cargo storage bays, and labour and equipment to move cargo between land and supply boat. So the chain is: you truck the goods to the service harbour, the agent’s or a hired boat loads them, runs out to the anchor position, and the crew hoists them aboard.[1,3]

Under the ISSA conditions your transport responsibility ends at the nearest point to the vessel your vehicle can reach with the necessary authority; at an anchorage that is the quay, and the boat leg must be agreed separately. Price it as its own line, or state that the buyer’s agent carries it. Our buyer-side anchorage delivery guide sets out the same chain from the ship’s side.[21]

  • Every vessel using the Fujairah anchorage must have a local agent based in Fujairah; the agent is your counterpart for the boat, the passes and the time on board.[4]
  • The ship must be at anchor: meetings between steaming vessels and service boats inside the anchorage are prohibited.[4]
  • Fujairah boats may serve ships in Fujairah territorial waters only; serving vessels beyond port limits (over 12 NM) is prohibited, so an OPL delivery needs a different arrangement.[5]
  • Skippers must check before leaving harbour that the items for each vessel are correct and that all cargo belongs to the agent’s vessel, exactly as the master or owner requested — a per-vessel packing list is what clears that check.[5]
  • Hazardous items may not be stored in the cargo bays and go straight to the boat; no stores or spares may be taken alongside the Fujairah Oil Terminal berths.[5]
  • Medicines are reserved to Ministry of Health–approved suppliers registered with the port; chandlers may not supply them.[5]

Khor Fakkan is not a Fujairah boat run

Khor Fakkan is in Sharjah. GAC reported a Port of Fujairah notice prohibiting Fujairah-registered service boats from serving vessels at the Khor Fakkan or Kalba anchorages from 20 October 2023, bunker barges excepted. A boat booked out of Fujairah for a Khor Fakkan ship will not go — confirm with the agent who may serve the ship and from which quay.[7]

Timing a delivery to the call

The Port of Fujairah tariff asks for 72 hours’ notice of arrival and lists a bonded stores list among arrival documents for ships calling the port. Agents are told to request clearance at least two hours, and not earlier than four hours, before sailing — anything still on a boat by then is late. In the Saudi Gulf, pre-arrival information and ETA notices go in at 72, 48 and 24 hours under the GCC seaport rules, and a Saudi agent must be appointed before the ship enters Saudi waters.[6,5,20]

Use those windows. When a requisition gives an ETA, work back from the sailing clearance, not the arrival: the boat, the passes and the harbour slot all sit between your warehouse and the ship.

Jeddah and Dammam: the agent is the gate

Saudi calls run through the ship’s agent, who under the Saudi Aramco port rules also handles provisions, minor repairs, medical care, mail and crew changes. In March 2026 the Saudi Ports Authority said it would keep an updated list of approved ship suppliers and bunkering providers so owners can deal with them directly — worth asking about if you serve Saudi ports, though we could not locate the list itself.[20,17]

Traffic has moved with the region: in March 2026, with Hormuz navigation disrupted, the Saudi Ports Authority set up corridors redirecting Gulf-bound cargo to Jeddah and the other Red Sea ports. Check the current position before committing stock to a port.[18]

Be the supplier at the port

On GeoMarineHub you activate the ports you actually serve and the categories you cover; requirements from vessels calling there reach you with the vessel type, ETA, payment terms and full line list, and you bid sealed.
